Summary of the Conferences

2017 - 6th International Conference 10-12 Feb 2017 at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur), India

Theme of the Conference - Vision for Humane Education.

This 6th conference was jointly organized by 7 universities/institutes: IIT Kanpur, AKTU Lucknow, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IKG-PTU Kapurthala, IIIT Hyderabad, RUB Thimphu and AGI Rajkot. It was inaugurated by Honorable Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Ram Naik on 10th Feb 2017.

There were 144 delegates (41 - Chancellors, VC's, Govt. Joint Secretaries & 102 - Directors, Deans, Principals, Professors, Business Persons & others) representing 107 universities / institutions who deliberated on the theme. In 144, 29 foreign delegates were from 6 countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Taiwan & UAE). Apart from delegates, 80 Volunteers were present across the country with one year of preparation.

There were extensive deliberations on a large set of issues, in particular, on the vision for humane education, on the nature of education for a humane society and on the role & potential of educational institutions in this. 102 delegates spoke from the dais.

There were 3 threads running through the conference between the inaugural and valedictory:

More than 40 universities in India and Bhutan have implemented universal human values in their academic curriculum. Out of these, 14 universities shared their reports with case studies and in-depth analysis of their experiences, including difficulties which came and how they addressed those difficulties.

2016 - 5th International Conference 8-10 January 2016 at Atmiya Group of Institutions, Yogidham Gurukul, Rajkot, Gujrat, India

Theme of the Conference - Education for Undivided Society and Universal Human Order.

It was organised jointly by Atmiya Group of Institutions (AGI), Rajkot, Gujarat, IKG-PTU, Kapurtala, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIIT Hyderabad, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (formerly UPTU), Lucknow and The Royal University of Bhutan.
There were 170 participants from 13 countries who deliberated on the theme. Shri Shantilalji Muttha, founder and national president of Bharatiya Jain Sanghthana, Pune was the chief guest at the inaugural function.

The need of Human Value Education in Higher Education was clearly emphasized by all. Many participants shared their interests in taking the initiative in implementing Universal Human Values in their universities/ colleges/ institutions. In particular, the Daffodil International University, Dhaka, Bangladesh showed keen interest.

2015 - 4th International Conference 27-29 March 2015 at GCBS, Gedu, Bhutan Educating for GNH Society

This conference was a 3-day, residential gathering of 120 distinguished individuals from 10 countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Norway) working in various fields - academia, government, civil society, foundations, and many others

The participants include 23 Chancellors, current Vice Chancellors, former Vice Chancellors, Pro-Vice Chancellors, and over 85 Institute Directors, Champions and leaders of human values education, heads of government and non-government agencies, leaders in the justice system, professors, research scholars, thought leaders, students and many others.

It was inaugurated by Her Majesty the Queen Mother of Bhutan, Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. The honourable prime minister and honourable home minister of Bhutan were also present at the inauguration.

The purpose of the conference was to deliberate to arrive at conclusions and develop commitment for incorporating Human Values in Education.

As a result of this conference, various organisations of the Government of Bhutan adopted universal human values as a part of their curriculum. The Royal Civil Services Commission included UHV in their in-service programs for all civil servants through their associated Royal Institute of Governance and Strategic Studies. Later, an exposure program was made available to all members of the parliament.

2014 - 3rd International Conference 28 February - 2 March, 2014 at PTU Jalandhar, India

Punjab Technical University (PTU) is organising 3rd International Conference on Human Values in Higher Education in association with Indian Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT, BHU);  Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad; and The Royal University of Bhutan from February 28 to March 2, at its Kapurthala campus.

This three-day event had participation of 97 senior dignitaries from SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) countries - 2 from Bangladesh, 9 from Bhutan, 75 from India, 3 from Nepal, 5 from Pakistan and 3 from Sri Lanka. Prof. (Dr.) Faiz-ul-Hasan, VC, University of Education, Lahore; Prof. Muhammad Aslam, VC, University of Health Sciences, Lahore; and Dr. Nazir A. Mughal, VC, University of Sindh, Jamshoro, Pakistan to address the audience.

At the conference, deliberations was held on some of the critical aspects of universal human values in higher education including the need for it; existing practices and experiences; guidelines, content and process (methodology); and the requirements given the current scenario.

According to Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice Chancellor, PTU, "Course on human values and professional ethics is mandatory for all programs in PTU since 2011. It is a part of core curriculum of 28 universities in 5 states of India and Bhutan. The content for the same has been developed by National Resource Centre for Value Education in Engineering (NRCVEE), IIT Delhi and IIIT Hyderabad. Our course adheres to all Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) guidelines of being universal, rational, verifiable and leading to harmony. The main objective behind this initiative is - we want to churn out engineers and managers that are not just skilled but socially conscientious as well. They should be ready to become responsible corporate citizens."

2013 - 2nd International Conference 16 - 18 February 2013 at IIIT Hyderabad, India

2nd International Conference on Human Values in Higher Education was held from 16-18 Feb 2013 at IIIT Hyderabad. It was organized jointly by IIIT Hyderabad, Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar and Royal University of Bhutan, Thimpu.

About 110 participants attended the conference with about 30 Vice Chancellors and Directors. Participants came from Bhutan, Nepal and US besides India. At the inauguration, Dr. M M Pallam Raju (Honarable Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India) stressed on the need to reinforce values throughout formal education.

He said this essential part of Nation building is even more important in today's context and must be a focus area for all educators. The 3-days of deliberations consisted of panel discussions, sharing of experiences and keynotes to develop specific recommendations and action plans.

2012 1st International Conference 6-8 Jan 2012 at IIIT Hyderabad, India

An International Conference on Human Values in Higher Education was organized during 6-8 January 2012 at IIIT Hyderabad, in collaboration with Punjab Technical University (PTU) and IIT Kanpur.

Dr. D Purandeshwari, Hon. Union Minister for Education, Government of India was the chief guest at the inauguration. 50 educationists, including 17 vice chancellor level, from 5 countries participated.

There were extensive deliberations on a large set of issues, in particular, on the vision of future society, nature of education, role of educational institutions, introducing Human Values in Higher Education, etc. Real life experiences were shared regarding running of courses on Human Values in some of the institutions. The Royal University of Bhutan decided to begin offering the foundation course on universal human values as a result of the deliberations.
